Who This Is Best For

Best for extraordinary athletes with unbreakable mental resilience who want the ultimate military challenge. BUD/S has extreme attrition — most who attempt it do not finish. But those who make it join the most respected warrior community in the world. If you have the physical gifts and psychological fortitude to endure the hardest selection process in the U.S. military, no other rate compares in prestige, challenge, or brotherhood.

+Pros

  • Active enlistment bonus available
  • Strong civilian career transition

Cons

  • Long A-school pipeline

Real Opinions

+Positive

If you make it through, the job is incredible. Small teams, high trust, meaningful missions.

The brotherhood is real. Nothing else in the military compares.

RallyPoint|

Every experience I went through was 100% worth it. Becoming a SEAL is about sacrifice and selflessness, but worth every single moment. You're now part of a legacy of service, sacrifice, and excellence that stretches back generations. The brotherhood is for life — the specialized training opens doors to career opportunities after service that most people can only dream about.

Critical & Mixed

Your body will be your tool, but it will also be the price you pay. Chronic pain, joint problems, and injuries are near certainties for special ops veterans.

NavySEAL.com|

You cannot talk about your work with almost anyone. This inability to share creates a wall. SEALs have one of the highest divorce rates in the military.

For every ten men who start, only one or two will earn the right to wear the Trident. The attrition rate requires unbreakable will.

BUD/S is the hardest military training in the world. Most people do not make it and that is by design.

Reddit|

The physical toll is real. Most guys have multiple injuries by the time they hit 30.

If you can make it through BUD/S, it's the most rewarding career in the military. Most don't make it.

Recruiter vs Reality

What the recruiter says vs. what it's actually like.

🫡 Recruiter says

This is the most elite program in the military. You will be among the best of the best!

The attrition rate is 50-80%. Most candidates do not complete the pipeline and get reassigned to fleet needs. Physical and mental demands are extreme and ongoing.

🫡 Recruiter says

If you're in good shape, you'll make it through BUD/S

💀 Reality

Source: RallyPoint

Being in good shape is the bare minimum. BUD/S is 80% mental. Collegiate athletes, marathon runners, and elite swimmers quit every class. The guys who make it are often not the strongest — they're the ones who refuse to ring the bell no matter what. Physical fitness gets you to the door. Mental toughness gets you through it.

🫡 Recruiter says

Navy SEALs deploy all the time and see constant action

💀 Reality

Source: r/navy

Deployment tempo has decreased significantly since the GWOT drawdown. Many SEAL teams spend more time training than deploying now. Your career may include long stretches of pre-deployment workups with relatively short actual deployments. The pace is not what it was in 2005-2015.

🫡 Recruiter says

Navy SEALs are the most elite warriors in the world.

BUD/S has a roughly 75% attrition rate. Most people who sign an SO contract will not become SEALs. If you drop, you will be reclassified to whatever the Navy needs, not what you want.

🫡 Recruiter says

If you want it bad enough, you'll make it through BUD/S.

💀 Reality

BUD/S attrition is 68-80%. When you factor in the entire pipeline, the success rate drops to roughly 9.5%. For every 20 people who sign an SO contract, maybe 1 or 2 become SEALs.

🫡 Recruiter says

Worst case, if BUD/S doesn't work out, you'll get to pick a new rate.

💀 Reality

If you quit or get dropped, you become an undesignated seaman — chipping paint, hauling lines, standing topside watches. You don't get to pick. The stigma of being a "BUD/S dud" is real.

🫡 Recruiter says

The training is the same for everyone — it all comes down to heart.

💀 Reality

BUD/S attrition for enlisted is close to 80%, while roughly 65% of officers make it through. Officers get more preparation and mentorship before they arrive. Your recruiter won't mention that distinction.

🫡 Recruiter says

You'll be in the best shape of your life as a SEAL.

💀 Reality

The long-term physical cost is brutal. Stress fractures, torn labrums, herniated discs, and chronic joint damage are almost universal. Most career SEALs have multiple surgeries before 35. VA disability claims from the SEAL community are among the highest in the military.

Watch Standing

4-section in port

In a 4-section rotation, the crew is divided into four teams. Each team stands a 6-hour watch shift, then has 18 hours off before their next watch. In port, you stand 24-hour duty roughly every 4 days — meaning you stay aboard the ship overnight on your duty day.
