Real Opinions
+Positive
“I would recommend SH to anyone considering it. The training is solid and the community takes care of its own.”
“SH was merged into RS, but the experience running shipboard services taught me management and customer service skills.”
“The SH role is one of the more laid-back positions in the Navy. You do not have the stress of constant battle training and you are responsible for sailors' morale through managing the ship store, barbershop, laundry, and vending machines.”
–Critical & Mixed
“Like any rate, SH has its downsides. Long hours, time away from family, and Navy bureaucracy are real.”
“The work is not glamorous but you interact with every sailor on the ship. Good for building people skills.”
“The rating does not always get the respect it deserves from other sailors. People look down on you for running the ship store and cutting hair instead of doing what they consider real Navy work. Despite being critical to morale, you get limited recognition.”
“The rating is extremely sea-intensive. Over a 20-year career, expect approximately 65 percent of your time assigned to sea duty. If you were hoping for a shore-heavy career, this is one of the worst rates for that. The physical work in laundry plants and ship stores on deployment can be grinding.”
Recruiter vs Reality
What the recruiter says vs. what it's actually like.
🫡 Recruiter says
“The SH rate offers great training and career advancement opportunities!”
💀 Reality
Source: MyNavyRates researchTraining and advancement are available but vary by command and manning. Ask specific questions about sea/shore rotation, typical duty stations, and advancement rates for SH.
🫡 Recruiter says
“You'll manage retail operations and run the ship's store — like being a business manager.”
💀 Reality
You manage vending machines, cut hair, run the laundry, and stock a tiny ship's store. "Business manager" is generous for what is a combination barber-laundromat-convenience store operator in a steel box at sea.
🫡 Recruiter says
“You might learn to cut hair as a Ship's Serviceman — it's a fun extra skill.”
💀 Reality
Cutting hair isn't optional — it's a core duty. You'll give hundreds of haircuts per week cutting the same three regulation styles over and over. It's production work, not creative barbering.
🫡 Recruiter says
“Ship's Serviceman is a solid rate with good career prospects.”
💀 Reality
The SH/RS rate has historically been overmanned with long sea duty rotations. Shore duty assignments are limited and competition is fierce because everyone wants off the ship.
🫡 Recruiter says
“Every rate in the Navy is equally important and respected.”
💀 Reality
Ship's Serviceman consistently ranks among the least respected rates in informal Navy polls. Running the laundry and vending machines doesn't carry the same weight as weapons systems or engineering.
🫡 Recruiter says
“Your retail and service experience will translate to civilian business careers.”
💀 Reality
Your experience translates to entry-level retail management, barbershop operation, or laundry service management — not exactly the Fortune 500 career the recruiter implied.

Watch Standing
4-section duty, galley/supply watch rotation
In a 4-section rotation, the crew is divided into four teams. Each team stands a 6-hour watch shift, then has 18 hours off before their next watch. In port, you stand 24-hour duty roughly every 4 days — meaning you stay aboard the ship overnight on your duty day.
Watch qualifications vary by command and platform. Expect to qualify within 90 days of reporting.
