Who This Is Best For

Best for natural leaders who stay calm under pressure and enjoy coordinating complex logistics in real time. If you have strong spatial awareness and communicate clearly in high-stakes situations, you'll excel here. Expect outdoor work in all weather conditions, but you'll develop exceptional leadership and crisis management experience that translates well to operations management roles.

+Pros

  • Strong civilian career transition

Cons

    Real Opinions

    +Positive

I would recommend ABH to anyone considering it. The training is solid and the community takes care of its own.

    r/navy|

ABH is the most physical rate on the flight deck but also the most exciting. You're directing aircraft, operating elevators, and managing the movement of multi-million dollar jets. The adrenaline rush of launching aircraft never gets old — it's the closest thing to an action movie the Navy offers.

    Indeed|

ABH handlers are the choreographers of the flight deck. Spotting aircraft on a crowded carrier deck is like solving a constantly changing puzzle at high speed. The teamwork is incredible — you develop a level of non-verbal communication with your crew that is hard to describe. Advancement is solid for ABH.

    Critical & Mixed

You move aircraft around the flight deck and hangar bay. It is physically demanding but there is a sense of teamwork that is hard to find anywhere else.

    Indeed|

The flight deck is one of the most dangerous workplaces in the world. Hearing damage is almost guaranteed.

    Indeed|

Leadership in the AB community can be really rough. A lot of yelling and not much mentoring.

    Glassdoor|

Like any rate, ABH has its downsides. Long hours, time away from family, and Navy bureaucracy are real.

    Recruiter vs Reality

What the recruiter says vs. what it's actually like.

    🫡 Recruiter says

The ABH rate offers great training and career advancement opportunities!

Training and advancement are available but vary by command and manning. Ask specific questions about sea/shore rotation, typical duty stations, and advancement rates for ABH.

    🫡 Recruiter says

ABH is the most visible rate on a carrier.

True during flight ops, but ABH also manages the hangar bay, operates elevators, and does crash and salvage duties. The glamorous directing role is a small part of the overall job.

    🫡 Recruiter says

ABH directs aircraft on the flight deck like a choreographer.

ABH does aircraft handling, but junior ABHs start by chocking and chaining aircraft, not directing them. The yellow shirt directors are senior ABHs. You work your way up.

    🫡 Recruiter says

"You'll get to pick your duty station after A-school."

    💀 Reality

You submit a "dream sheet" listing your preferred duty stations, but the detailer assigns you based on Navy needs. First-term sailors almost always go where there are open billets, not where they requested. If you only want one specific location, the Navy is not the career for that expectation.

    🫡 Recruiter says

"Your contract is flexible — things can be adjusted later."

Your contract is a legal document. Once signed, the only person with flexibility is the Navy. Verbal promises from recruiters are not binding. If it is not written in your contract, it does not exist.

    🫡 Recruiter says

"Physical fitness standards aren't that hard — you'll pass easily."

Failing the PRT twice in a three-year period triggers administrative action including possible separation. Standards tighten as you age. Start training before you ship.

    🫡 Recruiter says

"You'll be able to come home for every major family event."

Leave must be approved by your chain of command and can be denied for operational reasons. Deployments and duty days do not pause for birthdays, weddings, or funerals. You will miss things that matter.

    🫡 Recruiter says

"They can't make you do anything that isn't in your job description."

There is no job description in the Navy the way there is in a civilian job. You follow lawful orders. If the CO says the entire crew is painting the hull, you paint regardless of your rate.

    🫡 Recruiter says

"You'll make more money than your civilian friends right away."

E-1 through E-3 base pay is roughly $22K-$26K per year. Your hourly rate is often below minimum wage when you divide by actual hours worked underway.

    🫡 Recruiter says

"You'll never be bored — there's always something happening."

Military life has far more routine and repetition than adventure. Most days are watch rotations, maintenance, training, and admin tasks. If you need daily excitement, you will be disappointed.

    Watch Standing

Flight schedule dependent, rotating duty days

Watch standing is a 24-hour duty rotation where sailors take turns manning critical positions aboard the ship or at their command. The rotation determines how frequently you stand watch and how much rest time you get between shifts.

Watch qualifications vary by command and platform. Expect to qualify within 90 days of reporting.
